If the birth chart is the map, the Luck Pillars (大運, dà yùn) are the weather moving across it. Derived from your month pillar, they lay ten-year chapters over a life - each a stem-branch pair that interacts with your natal chart. On top of them, each year brings its own Liu Nian (流年, annual luck) pillar.

What luck pillars are

Each Luck Pillar covers roughly ten years and carries one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. They are derived from the month pillar, stepping through the sixty stem-branch combinations in order. A full life is typically read as seven to nine such chapters - childhood, youth, middle age, and later years each under different elemental weather.

Forward or backward

The pillars step forward through the cycle for males born in yang years and females born in yin years, and backward for the reverse combinations (順行/逆行). The first pillar traditionally begins a few years after birth - the exact count varies by school, usually derived from the days to the next solar term. Do not worry about the arithmetic: the chart tool computes it.

The annual layer: Liu Nian

Above the decade chapters sits the Liu Nian (流年): each calendar year's own stem-branch pillar, the same one the whole world shares that year. Readers layer them - natal chart as terrain, Luck Pillar as climate, Liu Nian as this year's weather. 2027, for instance, is a Ding-Wei (丁未) year for everyone; what it stirs depends on your chart.

How to read them

Everyday analogy. Think of a garden (your chart) through seasons (luck pillars) and this week's forecast (the annual pillar). A rainy decade helps the farmer and floods the builder - same weather, different terrain. Luck pillars describe conditions, not verdicts; the chart still decides what the conditions mean.

Where this leads

Timing language pairs naturally with the Useful God: decades that bring your needed element are traditionally read as supportive. For the full vocabulary, see the glossary; for your own pillars, the chart tool.
