Feng Shui (風水) literally means “wind-water.” It is the classical Chinese practice of siting and arranging buildings and graves in relation to landform, direction, and time - using the bagua, the five elements, and the compass. It is older, stranger, and more interesting than furniture-arranging tips.

What it actually is

Classical Feng Shui asks one question: where should this go, and which way should it face? Villages, houses, and tombs were sited by reading ridges ("dragons"), water mouths, and orientations against the compass. The goal was harmony between human dwelling and landform - practical as often as mystical, since a sheltered, well-drained site simply works better.

Two great schools

The Form School (巒頭) reads the visible landscape: mountains as dragons, water as wealth's carrier, the embrace of hills around a site. The Compass School (理氣) works with direction, time cycles, and formulas - Flying Stars (玄空飛星) being the most famous, mapping nine "stars" across the bagua grid as time moves. Most historical practice mixed both.

Its working tools

The luopan (羅盤) compass - concentric rings of bagua, stems, branches, and stars - is the practitioner's instrument. The bagua map divides space into eight directional sectors, each tied to a trigram, element, and life area. The shared vocabulary with the I Ching and Five Elements is not coincidence: it is the same cosmology applied to space.

An honest note

Two honest statements. First: the classical system is genuinely complex - anyone selling it as "move this plant, get rich" is selling the wrapping, not the practice. Second: specific outcome claims (this arrangement brings wealth by March) have no reliable evidence behind them. What is well-supported is the mundane half: light, air, orientation, and uncluttered space genuinely affect how a place feels. Treat the rest as cultural practice, and enjoy it as such.

Where this leads

The cosmology behind Feng Shui is shared with the whole tradition: start with Yin & Yang and the Five Elements, or browse the glossary for terms like luopan and Flying Stars.
