BaZi and Western astrology both do the same bold thing: read a birth moment as a map of a life. One grew in China from stems, branches, and elements; the other grew from Hellenistic roots through planets, signs, and houses. Same ambition, different instruments. Here is the honest comparison.

What they share
Both map the birth moment onto a symbolic structure; both have layered timing systems for unfolding it across a life; both are read as tendencies and themes, not fixed events by serious practitioners. And both are frequently reduced to sun-sign or animal-sign entertainment - which neither tradition's practitioners recognize as the real thing.
Where they differ
BaZi has no planets - its sky is stems, branches, and the five-element cycles of generation and control. Western astrology has no five elements - its grammar is planetary archetype expressed through sign and house. BaZi's central drama is balance around the Day Master; Western's is the interplay of planetary functions. Different instruments, different music.
