China produced two great birth-chart systems: BaZi (八字), built from stems, branches, and elements, and Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數), built from stars set in twelve palaces. Same birth data at the root, same yin-yang cosmology - very different reading experience. Here is how they compare.

What they share
Both start from the same birth data, both live inside the yin-yang and five-element cosmos, and both read a life as structure plus timing. Historically, educated practitioners often learned both - they were companion arts, not rivals.
Where they differ
BaZi is elemental accounting: every character is weighed for what it does to the Day Master's balance. Zi Wei is celestial narrative: stars like Zi Wei (the Emperor), Tian Ji, and Tai Yang are characters placed on the twelve palaces (life, wealth, career, and so on), and the Four Transformations show how they activate. One reads like engineering, the other like a cast of characters.
