Why read this

While BaZi calculates your elemental energy balance through time (stems and branches), Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數) maps your psychological archetypes and life sectors across space (stars and palaces).

Attributed historically to Daoist sage Chen Tuan (陳摶) and canonized in the Ming dynasty Wanli Xu Daozang (萬曆續道藏), Zi Wei is often called the "Emperor of Chinese Astrology." It is the most widely practiced astrological system in contemporary Hong Kong and Taiwan, prized for its vivid psychological archetypes and detailed life area mapping.

The Emperor & the 14 Stars

The name Zi Wei (紫微) refers to the North Star (the Purple Forbidden Enclosure), symbolizing the Emperor at the center of the cosmic court. Around this celestial pivot rotate 14 Major Stars (十四主星), representing human personality archetypes:

  • Command & Leadership: Zi Wei (紫微 · The Emperor), Tian Fu (天府 · The Treasurer), Wu Qu (武曲 · The General).
  • Strategy & Intellect: Tian Ji (天機 · The Strategist), Ju Men (巨門 · The Orator / Gatekeeper), Tian Liang (天梁 · The Elder / Mentor).
  • Expression & Warmth: Tai Yang (太陽 · The Sun / Generosity), Tai Yin (太陰 · The Moon / Nurture), Tian Tong (天同 · The Child / Leisure).
  • Drive & Transformation: Lian Zhen (廉貞 · The Diplomat / Rebel), Tan Lang (貪狼 · The Seeker / Charisma), Qi Sha (七殺 · The Marshal / Bold Pioneer), Po Jun (破軍 · The Vanguard / Reformer).
  • Harmony & Trust: Tian Xiang (天相 · The Prime Minister / Keeper of the Seal).

The Twelve Palaces

Every chart divides existence into Twelve Palaces (十二宮) arranged around a clock-like circular or square grid:

1. Life (命宮): Core identity, natural talents, and worldview.
2. Siblings (兄弟宮): Peers, business partners, and close associates.
3. Marriage (夫妻宮): Intimate relationships and emotional expectations.
4. Children (子女宮): Offspring, junior colleagues, and creative descendants.
5. Wealth (財帛宮): Cash flow, earning style, and financial disposition.
6. Health (疾厄宮): Physical constitution and subconscious stress.
7. Migration (遷移宮): External environment, travel, and social persona.
8. Friends (交友宮): Broader network, public community, and subordinates.
9. Career (官祿宮): Professional domain, leadership style, and work ethic.
10. Property (田宅宮): Real estate, domestic foundation, and family wealth.
11. Fortune (福德宮): Inner peace, spiritual mindset, and mental resilience.
12. Parents (父母宮): Ancestral heritage, mentors, and institutional authorities.

The Four Transformations (Si Hua)

Stars are not static; they are dynamically catalyzed by the Ten Heavenly Stems through the Four Transformations (四化):

  • Hua Lu (化祿 · Flow): Abundance, opportunity, smooth relationships, and optimism.
  • Hua Quan (化權 · Power): Authority, competence, executive will, and competitiveness.
  • Hua Ke (化科 · Fame): Intellectual clarity, academic honor, and protective reputation.
  • Hua Ji (化忌 · Karma): Fixation, friction, deep anxiety, and areas demanding patience.

A daily-life analogy

Everyday analogy. Imagine your life as an enterprise. The Twelve Palaces are the corporate departments: Executive (Life), Operations (Career), Treasury (Wealth), Public Relations (Migration), and Board of Advisors (Fortune). The 14 Stars are the executives assigned to run each department. The Four Transformations are the macroeconomic shifts that grant bonus budgets (Hua Lu) or impose restructuring audits (Hua Ji).

A 30-second example

Open a Zi Wei chart and look at exactly one palace: Ming Gong (命宮 · Life Palace). What star sits there? If it is Tian Ji, your natural mode is intellectual analysis and swift problem-solving. If it is Wu Qu, your natural mode is disciplined execution and tangible results. Next, find where Hua Ji (化忌) falls: that palace is not "cursed," but is where you feel the greatest sense of deficit and where your most profound life lessons unfold.

Where this leads

Zi Wei never reads a palace in isolation. It relies on the San Fang Si Zheng (三方四正)—the triangular interplay between Life, Wealth, Career, and Migration. From there, decennial cycles called Da Xian (大限) activate each palace for ten years at a time.
